There are over 230 different Doctor of Occupational Therapy degrees in the United States. The Doctorate of Occupational Therapy degree is often referred to as the OTD degree program, and is the terminal degree within occupational therapy (the highest degree level you can attain).

What should you know before applying for admission to an OTD degree?

It goes without saying, but every OTD program is a little bit different, so you will want to check with the admissions department of the university you are considering for your OTD degree. Generally speaking, here is what you should know about most OTD programs:

  1. A minimum of a Bachelor's degree, preferred within occupational therapy or a related field
  2. A Master's degree in Occupational Therapy is preferred for some OTD programs (not all)
  3. There are some options for OTA to OTD bridge programs
  4. The length of an OTD program is usually between two and three years
  5. Some courses for an OTD degree may be online, but it is highly likely you will have campus and clinical requirements you need to meet
